| Nationalism | The belief that people should be loyal mainly to their nation. |
| Nation-State | An independent geopolitical unit of people having a common culture and identity. |
| Chauvinism | exaggerated or aggressive patriotism. |
| Sardinia | The largest and most powerful of the Italian states |
| Cavour | He was the prime minister of Sardinia and he led the army that conquered northern Italy. |
| Garibaldi | He led a small army of rebel nationalists and captured Sicily and all of southern Italy. |
| Czar Alexander II | He wanted to make modernization and social changes in Russia. |
| Simon Bolivar | He was a revolutionary leader in the independence wars of South America |
| Otto Von Bismarck | He was the master of realpolotik |
| German Confederation | A loose grouping of 39 German states |
