Asian Empires
| Term | Definition |

| bureaucracy | when different ministers or officials are put in charge of different parts of the government. |
| Zoroastrianism | a religion that uses fire in many of its ceremonies and believes that the universe is in a constant struggle between the good (light) and evil (dark). |
| Asoka/Ashoka | famous Mauryan ruler who converted to Buddhism and spread the religion throughout his empire by stone pillars carved with Asoka's Edicts (laws for a peaceful society). |
| Golden Age of Learning | As a result of this, the Gupta Empire is known for inventions such as plastic surgery, decimals, Pi, vaccines for smallpox, and banks. |
| Mandate of Heaven | permission from the gods to rule. If an emperor lost this, the dynasty would be toppled and a new ruling family would take over. |
| Golden Age of China | Han emperors had roads, canals and ditches built to help farmers and merchants. Also, the wheelbarrow, compass, and collar harness were invented. |
| Emperor Qin | influenced by Legalist ideas, he united China by enforcing same strict laws everywhere in the empire. Was buried with a life-sized terra cotta army so he could rule in the afterlife |
| Han Dynasty | influenced by Confucianism, this dynasty is known for mild rules, for reducing taxes on peasants, and the Silk Road allows China to trade with other kingdoms throughout Asia. |
| Gupta Empire | started by Chandra Gupta, this dynasty encouraged scholars and scientists to study the world and Buddhism spread via the Silk Road. |
| Mauryan Empire | started by Chandragupta Maurya, these rulers were harsh and well-organized; they enforced strict laws harshly. Although most rulers were Hindus, Buddhism was beginning to spread throughout India. |
| Persian Empire | Royal Road connected the capital city of Persepolis to the outer areas (satrapies). This empire had a postal system. |
