Enlightenment Vocabulary

limited government Government where the leader has limited power.
absolutism form of government where the leader has all the power
unlimited government form of government where the leader has complete power
monarchy form of government with a monarch(king/queen/emperor) has control of the government.
constitution a set of rules the government must follow.
divine right theory where the king believes that God gave him the power to rule and if you go against him you are going against God.
Magna Carta Document signed by King John of England that limited his power.
English Bill of Rights Document in England that protects the given rights of the people.
democracy form of government where the people have power to make decisions in governmental decisions.
separation of powers political theory where the government power is separated into three branches.
checks and balances political theory where the government branches check each other so that one doesn’t gain too much power.
philosopher someone who studies philosophy; lover of wisdom.
scientific method a way to ask scientific question and answer the question with observations.
heliocentric Theory where the Sun is the center of the universe used by Copernicus.
geocentric Theory where the Earth is the center of the universe used by the Catholic Church.
