Gothic style a style of architecture used for churches in medieval Europe
anti-Semitism prejudice against Jewish people

schism a separation or division
crusader state a state established by western European Christians
burgher a resident or an official of a town or city
guild an association of merchants or craftspeople
epidemic a widespread disease
common law the traditional body of law in England that blends English and Norman elements
Parliament the assembly that advises the king or queen of England
Estates General the assembly that advised the king of France
nationalism the belief that people should be loyal to their country, not just to their leader
Inquisition the court of the Roman Catholic Church responsible for identifying and punishing heretics
Great Schism the split dividing the papacy in the High Middle Ages
antipope a pope not officially recognized by the entire Roman Catholic Church
indulgence a release by the Roman Catholic Church for some or all of a person's sins
