chapter 2: beginnings vocabulary

| mythic stories | traditional stories that often discuss the early hsitory of a people or explain some natural or social phenomenon. they tipically involve supernatural beings or events |
| primeval history | a period of time before historical facts, dates, and events |
| original sin | the first sin also knwn as the fall is what we as humans have within us that sometimes uses our freewill to do evil |
| freewill | free human choice that we rebel against god |
| patriarchs | the first great male leaders of a people |
| matriarchs | the first great female leaders of a people |
| folklore | composite of traditional customs, art forms, tales, and sayings preserved among a people |
| semites | ancient peoples of the near east, from whom israelites are descemdants |
| concubine | a surrogate mother |
| polygamy | the taking of more than one wife |
| circumcision | the removal of the foreskin of the penis is the ritual for all males as a sign of the covanant between god and the people identifying abe's people as god's people |
| religious truth | the deeper meaning that god intended in the stories. we will also call this theological interpretation |
| evolution | a scientific theory that is more complex forms developed from less complex forms |
| evolutionism | everything that exists can be explained apart from a character |
