What is the primary function of the respiratory system? Gas exchange.
What is the process of cells using oxygen and giving off carbon dioxide as a by-product to make energy available? Cellular respiration.
Name the body parts that air passes through in respiratory order. Nose,nasal cavity,pharynx,larynx,trachea,bronchi,alveoli,& then lungs.
Name the parts of the nasal cavity. Nasal conchae, meatuses,cilia, & goblet cells.
What are the functions of goblet cells? Produce mucus, moisten air, & trap foreign particles.
What is the pharynx? Muscular tube shared by respiratory & digestive systems.
What is the larynx? Voice box.
What are alveoli? Tiny sacs attached to the distal ends of the bronchioles.
What is the bronchi? They are 2 (right & left) large air-conductor passageways from the trachea to each lung.
What is the trachea? Windpipe.
What are bronchioles? Smaller (branch-like) versions of the bronchi.
What encases both lungs and what is it's function? Pleural membrane and it excretes a serous fluid to prevent friction.
What is the process of moving air in and out of the lungs? Pulmonary ventilation.
What muscles might be recruited for forceful inhalation? Upper trapezius,pectoralis major, sternocleidomastoid,serratus anterior,levator scapula, and others.
What muscles might be recruited for forceful exhalation? All abominals,internal intercostals, and parts of erector spinae.
What muscles are involved in normal inhalation? Contraction of diaphragm,scalenes, & external intercostals.
What muscles are involved in normal exhalation? Relaxation of diaphragm,scalenes, & external intercostals - gravity causes ribs to fall.
What process is specifically the exchange of gasses in the lungs External respiration.
What process is specifically the exchange of gasses in the tissues? Internal respiration.
