What are the purposes of joints in the body? To hold bones together via ligaments and to allow skeletal flexibility.
What is the name of the articulation that has no movement or extremely limited movement? Synarthrotic.
What articulation is only slightly moveable? Amphiarthrotic.
What articulations allow for freely moveable joints? Diarthrotic.
What's another name for diarthrotic joints? Synovial joints.
How many types of synovial joints are there? 6 types.
What synovial joint limits movement to flexion and extension (like a hinge)? Hinge joint.
What synovial joint allows ALL movements and has greatest R.O.M.? Ball & socket.
What synovial joint allows all movements except rotation (hint: your thumb)? Saddle joint.
What synovial joint limits movement to rotation only? Pivot joint.
What synovial joint follows a gliding movement? Gliding joint.
What synovial joint allows the movements of flexion,extension,abduction,& adduction but no rotation? Ellipsoidal joint.
In a synovial joint, what is the cartilage covering the articulation surfaces to allow easier movement? Hyaline or articular cartilage.
What is a joint capsule in a synovial joint? The continuation of the periosteum that envelopes joint over syovial membrane & under ligaments.
What is a ligament? Connective tissue that connects from bone to bone & reinforces/stabilizes a joint.
