Self help system The belief that countries cannot depend on any country but their own. Have power, and independence not authority. cannot depend on allies. no authority above the state. (realism)
Multi Polar world More than two great powers. This is less stable than a bi-polar world (2 powers)A never ending shift in alliances causes instability.
Bi-polar world only 2 great powers. Conflict is usually devastating. Both sides tend to avoid conflict.
Monolithic Communism Idea that all communism is centered in Moscow. so a victory by local communists is seen as a Moscow victory.
Treaty of westphalia The treaty that ended the 30 years war. The birth of the modern state system.
Deterrence A psychological concept. The idea of stopping someone from doing something that they want to do by making them believe a response would be given. by denial denying an opponent the ability to take what they want.
Anarchic world There is no central authority to make rules, or enforce them.
Sovereignty States have ultimate authority over what happens within their borders. Authority is almost always not absolute, sovereignty exists within limits.
Balance of Power A part of Neo-realism. When one country gets too powerful other countries will join against them.
Triangular diplomacy The idea of playing one local group off an another. 1964 Nixon wanted to improve American security by establishing contact with the people of China. Since Russia and China were on the verge of war each were terrified of the U.S siding with the other.
Cuban Missle Crisis 1962- The soviet leader placed nuclear weapons in Cuba which is about 90 miles from key west. This was intended to fill the missile gap between Cuba and the U.S. which the Soviet Leader thought would level the playing field.
