| Term | Definition |

| Cardinal directions | The four most commonly used forms of direction on a compass |
| Compass rose | Symbol used on maps to show the cardinal directions |
| Equator | Line running east to west around the earth, dividing it into two hemispheres |
| Hemisphere | Half of the earth or globe |
| Latitude | Distance north or south of the equator |
| Longitude | Distance east or west of the prime meridian |
| Physical map | A map that shows the natural features of the earth such as mountains, rivers, and deserts |
| Political map | A map that shows the man-made features of an area such as national borders, cities, and roads |
| Prime Meridian | Line running north to south around the globe, dividing it into two hemispheres |
| Thematic map | A map that shows information about a specific theme such as population or voting zones |
