WHII.1 Geography - Basic Terms

TermDefinition
Cardinal directions The four most commonly used forms of direction on a compass
Compass rose Symbol used on maps to show the cardinal directions
Equator Line running east to west around the earth, dividing it into two hemispheres
Hemisphere Half of the earth or globe
Latitude Distance north or south of the equator
Longitude Distance east or west of the prime meridian
Physical map A map that shows the natural features of the earth such as mountains, rivers, and deserts
Political map A map that shows the man-made features of an area such as national borders, cities, and roads
Prime Meridian Line running north to south around the globe, dividing it into two hemispheres
Thematic map A map that shows information about a specific theme such as population or voting zones
