Islam

TermDefinition
nomad A person who moves from place to place rather than settling permanently.
oasis Desert area that contains water.
clan Families of people related by blood or marriage.
Allah Arabic word for "God".
monotheism The belief in one god.
pilgrimage A journey to a sacred place or shrine.
Islam A religion based on the teaching of the prophet Muhammad.
Muslim A believer in Islam.
Qur'an The Muslim holy book.
Sunnah Teaching and practices of Muhammad used as a guide to living a proper life.
mosque Muslim house of worship.
Caliph Secular and religious head Muslim community.
Shi'a A branch of Islam that resisted the rule of the Umayyads.
Sunni Branch of Islam that followed customary practices and tradition and accepted the elected caliphs as rightful successors of Muhammad and did not resist the Umayyads.
Hijrah The migration to Yahrib {200 miles} in 622 by Muhammad and his followers.
Ka'aba Muslim shrine in Mecca toward which the faithful turn to pray.
