Shi'a a Muslim group that resisted the Umayyads' rule, believing that the caliph should be a relative of the prophet Muhammad
Sunni a member of the Muslim group that accepted the rule of the elected caliphs and did not resist the Umayyads
Hijrah the move of Muhammad and is followers from Mecca to the city of Yathrib in a.d 622
Ka'aba a Muslim shrine in Mecca toward which the faithful turn to pray
