Language

Lesson 4 Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
Bilingualsim The ability to speak two languages fluently.
Creole Language that is created when an indigenous language is combined with a colonizer's language.
Dialect Local spoken variation of a language.
Extinct language A language that is no longer has any speakers or is no longer in use.
Indo-European Language Family The largest language family. Contains English, Spanish, French, Italian just to name a few.
Isogloss Language or word usage boundary.
Language System of communication thru speech.
Language families Collection of languages related to each other through a common ancestry. Often times long before history was recorded.
Lingua Franca A language commonly used for business or trade between people of two different languages.
Official Language The language used in a country by a government. Many countries have more than one official language.
Pidgin A simplified form of a lingua franca that mixes in some of the indigenous language.
