Types of feed

Feeds are classified 2 ways: Roughages, concentrates
Plant part of an animal's ration that is high in fiber Roughage
Grains providing a concentrated source of energy and/or protein Concetrates
Examples of roughages Hay, pasture, silage, haylage
Silage Chopped up corn plant that is fermented in a silo
Haylage Chopped up hay that is fermented in a silo
Two types of hay Legumes, grass
Examples of legumes Alfalfa, clover, vetch, soybeans
Examples of grass Brome, Timothy, tell fescue, orchard grass
Two types of concentrates Energy, protein
Examples of energy concentrates Corn, barley, oats, wheat, potato, molasses
Examples of protein concentrates Soybean meal, cottonseed meal, brewer's grains
