Family, Principles of Descent, and understanding Kinship Systems.

QuestionAnswer
What is a family? A group of two or more people, related by birth, marriage, or adoption.
What are the different types of families? Single parent, Nuclear, and extended
What are the two types of nuclear families? family of orientation, and family of procreation
What are descent systems? Rules for defining social identity based on how a specific culture defines ancesry
What are the three ways to define descent? Unilineal, Bilateral, Ambilineal
What are two examples of unilineal descent groups? Matrilineal, and Patrilineal
What is a unilineal descent group? The descent rule uses one line only; either the male or the female line
What is a bilateral descent group? Relationships are recognized trough both lines of descent. (seen more in the US)
What is an ambilineal descent group? More flexible than the unilineal descent system. They do not automatically exclude one side of the family. They can choose to recognize relationships from either side, but not both
What are the three different forms of descent groups? Linage, Clan, Bilateral kindred
What is a descent group? A permanent social unit whose members claim common ancestry and kinship
What is a lineage? A descent group with a common known ancestor. ( patrilineage and matrilineage )
What is a clan? Several lineages, with ancestor as a mythical figure
What are non human ancestors called? Totems
What are bilateral kindred? Membership is based on recognizing close relatives on mother's and father's side.
What are parallel cousins? Child of father's brother or of mother's sister
What are cross cousins? Child of father's sister or of mother's brother
What are the four kinship terminology categorization systems? Lineal, Bifurcate merging, Generational terminology, and Bifurcate collateral
What is affinineal ? Related by marriage
