Ch. 15 The growth of Democracy

QuestionAnswer
What does Democracy Mean? It means rule by the people. People vote for their leaders. People want laws to be fair to everyone.
What was the world's first democracy? It was Athens.
Who helped William the Conqueror make laws? William asked a group of nobles and church leaders to help him.
What is the Magna Carta? It is a paper that sid the king must obey the laws. It said a king could not make laws by himself.
How did the Magna Carta change England? A accused person could not be sent to prison without a trial by jury. The King could not make tax laws by himself.
What is a trial? A meeting that decided if you broke a law.
What is a jury? A group of people that listen to the story.
What was Parliament? A group of people that helped make laws created from the Magna Carta.
What did the King have to do if he needed more tax money? The king would have to ask members of Parliament and they would decide whether the people would pay more taxes. The king had to obey the laws of Parliament.
What were the 2 parts of Parliament? The house of Lords and The House of Commons.
Who was in the House of Lords? It was made up of the nobles.
Who made up the House of Commons? It was made up of the middle class.
What did that Bill of Rights do? It gave Parliament power to make laws, Freedom of Speech, people the right to vote.
What did John Locke do? Helped spread the idea of democracy.
