Terms and definitions of basic ag structures terminology
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Frame | the skeleton or structure onto which decking, sheathing, other materials are attached |
| Sheathing | layer of material attached to the outer studs/joists/rafters to strengthen the structure and provide a base for the exterior |
| Rafter | the sloping frame that supports the roofing of a structure |
| Rise | the vertical distance or increase in elevation between the top of the plate and ridge of a building |
| Run | 1/2 the span of the building |
| Span | distance between the outside wall plate of one wall and the outside wall plate of another; the width of the building |
| Dressed Lumber | lumber of uniform dimensions that is smooth and free of splinters |
| Common Nail | ordinary nail; medium-size head; sized by length or d (penny); range from 2d to 60d |
| Finishing Nail | slender nail with a small head that is typically used to attach trim or other small wood pieces |
| Lumber | wood products that have been made by the sawing up of logs |
