Terms and definitions of basic ag structures terminology

TermDefinition
Frame the skeleton or structure onto which decking, sheathing, other materials are attached
Sheathing layer of material attached to the outer studs/joists/rafters to strengthen the structure and provide a base for the exterior
Rafter the sloping frame that supports the roofing of a structure
Rise the vertical distance or increase in elevation between the top of the plate and ridge of a building
Run 1/2 the span of the building
Span distance between the outside wall plate of one wall and the outside wall plate of another; the width of the building
Dressed Lumber lumber of uniform dimensions that is smooth and free of splinters
Common Nail ordinary nail; medium-size head; sized by length or d (penny); range from 2d to 60d
Finishing Nail slender nail with a small head that is typically used to attach trim or other small wood pieces
Lumber wood products that have been made by the sawing up of logs
