Vocabulary used in our study of Ancient China
| Term | Definition |

| Dynasty | When one family line keeps control. A father rules as leader and when he dies, his son takes control. When that man has a son, his son will take over when he dies. |
| Emperor | A ruler of an empire that includes either other countries or nations. |
| Ancestors | A person from whom one is descended and who lived several generations ago. Example: Your great grandfather is your ancestor. |
| Civilization | A group of people that shares a common language(s), writing system, and system of government. |
| Scholars | Teachers, scientists, intelligent people |
| Merchants | Someone who buys or sells things and makes a profit. |
| Mandate of Heaven | If a leader was good, then family ancestors in heaven would make sure that people were prosperous and healthy. If there was a bad leader, the family ancestors in heaven would cause eatrhquakes, floods and droughts. |
