Polytheism Belief in two or more gods.
values ideals that tell us what is good or bad and right or wrong
family the most important unit of social organization
ethnocentrism belief that your own culture is superior
monogamy marriage to only one person
nuclear family type of family where it's just the husband, wife and kids living in a household
patriarchal type of family authority where the father has all the power
egalitorian type of family authority where the husband and wife share in the decision making.
dictatorship type of government where one leader has all power
mores a violation of these norms endangers the well-being and stability of society.
counter culture Part of a culture that reflects the cultural norms of society and replaces them with their own:like the anti-war protestors of the 1960's
Cultural relativism a view that cultures should be viewed by their own standards, from the point of veiw of a person living in that culture.
cultural lag when culutre falls behind another culture
stratification a ranking of people into higher or lower levels based on status
folkways norms like covering yoor mouth when you sneeze and shaking someone's hand when you first meet them
caste system status system where there is absolutely no social mobility: born poor always poor
extended family type of family where your grandparents live with you
