Shinto Japanese religious tradition based on respect for nature and ancestors
Regent Official who rules until a child who will become an emperor or empress is able to rule
Prince Shotoku One of Japan's most important regents
Embassy Office of a government in another country
Zen Sect of Buddhism that emphasized self-discipline, simplicity, and meditation
Noh A style of drama developed in Japan in the 1300's where actors wear wooden masks
Kabuki A style of drama developed in Japan in the early 1600's that combines singing, dancing, and elaborate costumes
Lady Murasaki Shikibu One of Japan's finest writers and the author of The Tale of Genji
Haiku A form of poetry with 17 syllables - 3 lines of 5,7, and 5 syllables
Daimyo A large landowner in Japan
Samurai A trained warrior who belonged to the private armies of the daimyo
Vassal A person who receives land and protection from a lord in return for loyalty
Shogun The Japanese military leader who rules on the emperor's behalf
Tokugawa Shogunate The rule of Japan by Tokugawa Ieyasu and his successors in the Tokugawa family
