Indulgence (p.391) a release from all or part of punishment for sin by the Catholic Church, reducing time n purgatory after death
salvation (p.390) acceptance into heaven; the state of being saved (that is, going to heaven) through faith alone or through faith and good works
Edict of Worms (p.392) a decree by the Holy Roman Empire, Luther was made an outlaw within the empire, his works were burned, he was captured, but Luther's ruler Elector Fredrick of Saxony sent him into hiding and protected him
What did humanists believe? (p.390) the ability of human beings to reason & improve themselves; people would become more pious (religious) if they read the classics and Christian works. They believed that in order to change society, they must first change the human beings that make it up.
Why did Martin Luther break with the Catholic Church? (p.391-392) upset w/selling of indulgences: wrote the Ninety-five Theses (list-attacks on abuses in sale of indulgences); didn't agree w/ system of sacraments (only baptism & Eucharist/Communion); clergy to marry; new doctrine of salvation: faith alone not good works
predestination (p.396) the belief that God had determined in advance who would be saved (the elect) and who would be damned (the reprobate)
annul (p.397) declare invalid
John Calvin (p.396) converted to Protestantism, fled Catholic France to Switzerland; like Luther, he believed in the doctrine of justification by faith alone in how humans achieved salvation; came up with idea of predestination;
What led to the Protestant Reformation in England? rooted in politics, not religion; King Henry VIII wanted to divorce his first wife Catharine of Aragon -only had a daughter with her, needed a male heir; wanted to marry Ann Boleyn, didn't wait for annulment by church turned to English courts for divorce
