Vocabulary "God's Revelation and Our Response"

| transcendence | The teaching that God, by nature, is beyond this world and beyond the comprehension of human beings. |
| immanence | A trait of God which refers to his intimate union with and total presence to his creation, whereby he upholds and sustains all creation in their being. |
| atheist | A person who denies the existence of God. |
| agnostic | A person who asserts that he or she does not know whether there is a God or not. |
| Magisterium | The official teaching authority of the Church comprised by the Pope and bishops who a re successors of Christ and his Apostles. |
| Deposit of Faith | The body of saving truths and the core beliefs of Catholicism that are faithfully preserved by the Magisterium. |
| Sacred Scripture | The inspired Word of God; the written record of God's Revelation. |
| Canon of the Bible | The official list of inspired books in Scripture. Catholics list 46 Old Testament books and 27 in the New Testament. |
| Sacred Tradition | The living transmission of the Catholic faith through the teaching, life and worship of the Church. |
| dogma | A central truth of Revelation that Catholics are obliged to believe. |
| virtue | Moral excellence and righteousness; an inclination and habitual preference for the good. |
| faith | One of the theological virtues. It is an acknowledgement of an allegiance to God. |
| religion | A set of beliefs, values and practices that binds believers in a relationship with God and with other believers. |
| Body of Christ | A rich image for the Church from St. Paul who wrote that the Church is like a body - Christ is the head. Paul taught that the members of the Church are like the parts of the body, drawing direction from the head & life from the rest of the body. |
