WVSOM -- Medical Neuroscience -- Somatosensory 2

QuestionAnswer
What information does the trigeminal nerve carry back to the brain? touch, temperature, pain and proprioception from the oral-facial cmplex to the brainstem
Where is the primary sensory neuron of the orofacial fine touch and vibration pathway? trigeminal ganglion
Where do first order neurons synapse in the orofacial fine touch and vibration pathway? chief sensory nucleus on ipsilateral side
Where do second order neurons of the orofacial fine touch and vibration pathwy project? bilaterally thru the brainstem and synapse bilaterally in the VPM of the thalamus.
Where do the third order neurons of the orofacial fine touch and vibration pathway project? from the VPM to the primary somatosensory cortex
Where do the primary neurons of the orofacial proprioceptive pathways have its soma? Mesencephalic nuceus
Where do the mesencephalic nucleus project axons? out bilaterally out to the trimgeminal motor nucleus then out the V3 branch of the trigeminal ganglion to innervate the muscles of mastication
Where is the primary sensory neuron of the orofacial pain and temperature pathway have its soma and wehre does it project? trigeminal ganglion and projects into the brain stem where it synapses in the spinal trigeminal nucleus on ipsilateral side.
Where do second order neurons project? from the soma in the spinal trigeminal nucleus to the contralateral side of the brainstem and ascend in the ventral trigeminal tract to synapse in the VPM
Where is the third order neurons of the orofacial pain and temperature pathway? Project from the soma in the VPM to synapse in the primary somatosensory cortex
Explain the corneal reflex. Touch the cornea, CN V then synapses in nucleus of spinal tract of V, goes to the RF then is sent back to the facial motor nucleus out thru C?N VII to blink.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
