TermDefinition
Assignats Paper money printed during the time of the French Revolution.
Bastille An old fortress, in Paris, once used as a prison. It is a symbol of the French Revolution.
Bourgeoisie A French term for middle class.
Cahiers Books that listed the complaints and criticisms against the French monarchy.
Coup d' Etat A plot to overthrow the government, usually led by a small group of people.
Estates The classes French population was divided into before the French Revolution.
Fundamental Cause A cause that has deep roots in the past.
Immediate Cause A cause that leads directly to action.
Guillotine A device with a heavy blade used for beheading.
Plebescite A vote of the people by direct ballot on a political issue.
Reign of Terror A period in French history characterized by rioting, war, and disagreement.
Revolution Any sudden or complete change in a society.
