Louis XVI | The King of France who was beheaded by the French people during the French Revolution because of his weak leadership. |
Estates-General | The French representatives from the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Estates called by Louis XVI to approve tax reform during France's financial crisis. |
National Assembly | To gain power over the king, the Third Estate renamed itself the National Assembly and created the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. |
Tennis Court Oath | The members of France's National Assembly made a pledge to create a new constitution when meeting in an indoor tennis court. |
Legislative Assembly | The completion of the new constitution in 1791 created a new lawmaking body called the Legislative Assembly and established France as a constitutional monarchy. |
Jacobins | A radical political organization that became very influential in the French government and that guide the decision to execute Louis XVI. |
Maximilien Robespierre | A Jacobin leader who took dictatorial power in France and initiated the Reign of Terror. |
Reign of Terror | 1000s of French men and women were accused of being "enemies" of the Revolution and executed by the guillotine. |
