What is Alliteration? | The repitition of beginning consonant soundds in words in a sentence. Examples: sweer smell of sucsess, a dime a dozen, bigger and better, jump for joy. |
What is Antonym? | a word that is the opposite of another word. |
What is Antagonist? | main character in opposition to the protagonist. sometimes not a person but an obstacle such as a main force of nature, society or inner conflict. |
What is Protagonist¿ | Central character or hero in a story, usualy, thwe "good guy" or the one with whom the audiences identify |
What is Authors purpose? | the authors reasonor intention for writing the selection. always ask yourself - is the purpose to entertain, to inform or to persuade? skim the selection and attempt to determine the authors purpose befor you read the selection. |
what is Autobiography? | the story of a person's life written by the person. |
what is biography? | the story of a person's life writte by another person. |
what is characterization? | the method an auther uses to communicate information about the charaters to the reader. |
what is direct characterization? | when the auther of the story tells the reader directly about the actions, personality and physical appearance of the character |
what is indirect characterization? | when the auther of the story does not tell the reader directly about the character; insted the read has to infer what the character is like based on the characters's throughts, actions and conversation. |
what is compare and contrast? | comapare means the show similaritys and contrast means to show defferances. |
what is climax | the moment when the action of the story comes to its highest point in the story. |
What is Conclusion? | the end of a reading selection |
what is conflict? | struggle between opposing forces in literature |
what is character vs. character? | a conflict between characters such as family coflict, trouble with a bully or difficulties in romance. this type of conflict is external. |
what is character vs. nature? | a conflict between a character and a force in nature. |
what is character vs. self? | a internal conflict that takes place in a characters mind. for example, a character may have to decide between right or wrong or between two solutions to a problem. |
what are connections? | text to self; world; or text. the reader can relate to what he has read to somthing else. |
what are context clues? | information within the reading selection that helps the reader figure out the meaning of challenging words. |
what is a dialogue? | the actual words/convesation a character says to another character. |
what is avaluate? | to examine a judge; to say somthing that is good or bad - if you like it or you don't. |
what is exposition? | the backround information that the auther about the setting, plot, character or other essential details in a story. |
what is expository text? | text written to explain and convey information about a specific topic. |
what is a fable? | a narrative intended to convey a moral or lesson to the reader. |
what is fact vs. opinion? | fact is somthing that can be proven or is true, opinion is just someone elses point of view. |
what is falling action? | the part of a story following a climax. |
what is fiction? | any story that was produced by the imagination other than a fact. |
what is figurative language? | language that cannot be taken literally since it was written to create a special effect. |
what is a flashback? | technique in which the auther interrups the plot of the story to recreate an incident of an earlier time; flashback is often used to provide additional information to the reader. |
what is foreshadowing? | technique i which the auther provides the reader with clues about events that will happen later in the sory. |
what is generalizations? | when you make assumptions about differant events and/or characters and apply them to new situations. |
what is genre? | categories of literature such a biography, mystery, historical, sports and romance. |
What is a graphic organizer? | an organizational picture, such as Venn diagram, or webbing, that helps the learner identify more important elements. |
what is homophone or homonym? | two or more words that are pronounced alike but have differant meanings. example: to, two, too. |
What is a hyperbole? | an exaggerated statement used to make strong effect. example: my dog is so ugly, we have to pay people to pet him. |
what is an inference? | reading between the lines. taking what the author wrote and adding it to what you no to make an assumption. |
what is irony? | a differance between what is expected and what actually happenes; 2 types are dramatic irony, and situational irony. |
what is dramatic irony? | occurs when an event is the direct opposite of the readers and characters thought would happen. |
what is situational irony? | occurs when there is a contradiction between what the character thinks and what the reader knows to be the truth. |
what is a metephor? | a comparison between two unlike things without using the words like or as. |
what is mood? | the overall feeling created by the authors words. |
what is the narrator? | the speaker of the story. |
what is nonfiction? | writing that is true and the purpose is to inform. nonfiction communicates knowledge about real people events and/or situations. |
