| chronology | a sequence of events in time |
| cultural diffusion | the spread of cultural traits from one society or place to another |
| evidence | information in various forms used by historians to reconstruct the past |
| gender roles | customs relating to the position of men and women in society |
| interregional | referring to a land area covering two or more regions |
| kinship | family relationship, either by birth, marriage, or adoption |
| periodization | the division of history into periods of time |
| point of view | a person’s way of thinking about a subject |
| primary source | a historical record or document produced by an eyewitness or other observer who lived during the time period in question |
| secondary source | a record or document referring to past events but not produced at the time |
| spatial frames | different geographic perspectives that historians apply to world events |
| universal standards | ideas or values, such as human rights, that are said to apply to all people |
