Anatomy 1--Joints

Joints of the body

TermDefinition
Synarthrosis Immovable joints
Amphiarthrosis Slightly movable joints
Diarthrosis Freely movable joints
Fibrous Joints Connected by fibrous tissues, namely dense fibrous connective tissue.
Sutures Wavy articulating bone edges that interlock and found only in the skull.
Gomphosis Peg-in-socket fibrous joint found only in the teeth.
Cartilaginous Joints Connected by cartilage. There is no joint cavity present and are not highly movable
Synchondrosis A joint in which a bar or plate of hyaline cartilage connects the bones. Growth plates in children.
Symphysis Fibrocartilage uniting the bone, acting as a shock absorber and permits a limited amount of movement.
Synovial Joints Separated by a fluid-containing joint cavity which allows a substantial freedom of movement. Nearly all joints of the limbs, and most joints of the body, fall into this category
Synovial Joint breakdown Articular cartilage, Joint/articular cavity, Articular Capsule, Fibrous layer, Synovial membrane, and Synovial Fluid.
Articular Discs An inward extension of the articular capsule that completely divides the synovial cavity in 2.
Menisci An inward extension of the articular capsule that partially divides the synovial cavity in 2.
Bursae Flattened fibrous sacs lined with synovial memebrane and a thin film of synovial fluid. "Ball Bearings".
Tendon Sheaths An elongated bursae that wraps completely around the tendon.
Synovial Joint movements Gliding movements, Rotation and Angular Movements
Gliding movements Occurs when one flat bone glides over another
Rotation The turning of a bone around it's own axis
Angular Movements Movements that increase or decrease the angle between 2 bones
Medial Rotation Internal rotation. When a joint rotates the limb turns in towards the midline
Lateral Rotation External rotation. Rotation swings the limb from the midline
Lateral Flexion Only at axial skeleton. Neck or vertebral column bends laterally to the side
