| countertransference | an emotional reaction of the therapist that reflects the therapist's inner needs and conflicts |
| incident report | a report to document unusual things that happen to a client during a session |
| integrity | a conduction of being whole and undivided |
| transference | the unconscious tendency of the client to assign to others the feelings and attitudes associated with significant people in their early life |
| confidentiality | nondisclosure of privileged information |
| intimacy | a sensual bond to another that involves choice, mutuality, reciprocity, trust, and delight |
| multidimensional relationship | type of relationships that exists in addition to therapeutic massage |
| code of ethics | set of guiding morals or principles that govern one's course of action |
| scope of practice | working parameters of a profession |
| client neglect | unintentional physical or emotional harm sustained by the client resulting from lack of knowledge or insensitivity on therapist's behalf |
| licensure | a mandatory process to be completed to engage in an occupation that would otherwise be considered unlawful |
| standards of practice | a list of standards to assist the professional in making good decisions while conducting day to day responsibilities within their scope of practice |
| client abuse | physical or emotional harm sustained by the client due to deliberate acts of the therapist |
| reciprocity | massage license in one jurisdiction being recognized as valid in another jurisdiction |
| liability insurance | obtained through massage insurance providers; protects the massage therapist in cases of malpractice and accidents |
| client files | should be retained by the massage therapist for a minimum of 6 years, per the IRS; completely confidential at all times |
| SOAP Notes | used to document everything regarding a previous massage treatment |
| SOAP "S" | subjective; anything the client details about themselves |
| SOAP "O" | objective or observation; techniques being performed; any measurable details the therapist can physically see |
| SOAP "A" | assessment; any changes in the client resulting from treatment; possible problem areas/causes of injuries, sore sports, tight muscles, etc.; type of massage work given |
| SOAP "P" | plan or recommendation for future treatment or exercises suggested to the client between sessions |
| mission statement | a short statement detailing the general purpose of the business |
| HIPAA | Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 |
| privacy rule | protects all individually identifiable health information; assures health information of individuals is protected while allowing health information to be transferred securely between healthcare providers to provide high-quality health care |
| independent contractor | a massage therapist who contracts work for a person or business by signing a contract; receives no benefits |
| sole proprietor | a business that has only one owner |
| partnership | a business that has 2 or more owners |
| 1099 | filed by the independent contractors who make more than $600 per year |
| Schedule C | filed by sole proprietors; details profit and loss for the previous year |
| Schedule K-1 | filed by partnership members; details income and taxes for each partnership member from the previous year |
| 1040 | tax form detailing deductions and dependents |
| W-2 | filed by employees; details income and taxes from the previous year |
| advertising | making your business noticeable to the public by purchasing print or broadcast media |
| media | systems of mass communication |
| marketing | promoting your business with image, purpose, and direction |
| contract | written agreement between two or more parties that communicates expectations, duties, and responsibilities; this agreement is enforceable by law |
| publicitiy | free media exposure |
| preceptor | someone who guides you through your post-graduate clinicial experience |
| curriculum vitae | an autobiographical sketch that documents all your achievements; occupational, avocational, and academic |
| balance sheet | summary of financial balances of a sole proprietor |
| inventory | unsold retail items you have on hand |
| accounts receivable | money owed to your business |
| portfolio | all various investments held by an individual investor |
| accounts payable | money your business owes to others |
| depreciation | the process of spreading out deduction for the cost of an asset over time |
| profit & loss statement | statement of income that outlines revenues and expenses over a fixed period; indicates whether your business earned a profit or loss |
| IRA | individual retirement account; tax-deferred retirement account in which some or all contributions may be tax deductible; depending on the individual's adjusted gross income and coverage by an employer sponsored retirement plan |
