Vocabulary terms for Globes and Maps

TermDefinition
Globe A Model of the Earth
Hemisphere Any half of the Earth.
Latitude and Longitude Imaginary lines on a globe that measure distance.
Cartographer A map maker.
Key A part of the map that explains what symbols represent.
Compass Rose A part of the map that shows the four main directions.
Political Map A map that shows cities, capitals, and boundaries.
Equator A line that divides the Earth into Northern and Southern hemispheres.
Physical Map A map that shows natural features.
River A large natural stream of water flowing in a channel to the sea, a lake, or another such stream
Mountain A large natural elevation of the earth's surface rising abruptly from the surrounding level; a large steep hill
Peninsula A piece of land almost surrounded by water or projecting out into a body of water
Island A piece of land surrounded by water
Strait A narrow passage of water connecting two seas or two other large areas of water
Sea A large lake
Bight A curve or recess in a coastline, river, or other geographical feature
Canal An artificial waterway constructed to allow the passage of boats or ships inland or to convey water for irrigation
Border A line separating two political or geographical areas, especially countries
Capital The most important city or town of a country or region, usually its seat of government and administrative center
City A large town
Country A nation with its own government, occupying a particular territory
