Age of Exploration

| Encomienda | Spanish settlers are given land and natives to work the land in the new colony |
| Mercantilism | System in which the colony produces raw materials for the mother country, who turns them into manufactured goods and sells them back for a profit |
| Colombian Exchange | Exchange of goods, animals and diseases between Europe and the Americas |
| Colony | A territory under the control of a country (Ex. New Spain and Peru were colonies under control of the mother country Spain) |
| Conquistadors | Spanish conquerors of Latin America (ex. Hernan Cortes & Francisco Pizzaro) |
| Astrolabe | An instrument used to measure the angle of the sun or a star in order to figure out one's location |
| Viceroy | Official who rules a colony in place of the king |
| Imperialism | A strong country takes over and controls a weaker country |
| The Middle Passage | The transport of slaves from Africa to the Americas across the Atlantic Ocean (called such due it being the "middle leg" of the triangle trade) |
| African Diaspora | The forced dispersal (spreading out) of Africans from their homeland |
