Age of Exploration

TermDefinition
Encomienda Spanish settlers are given land and natives to work the land in the new colony
Mercantilism System in which the colony produces raw materials for the mother country, who turns them into manufactured goods and sells them back for a profit
Colombian Exchange Exchange of goods, animals and diseases between Europe and the Americas
Colony A territory under the control of a country (Ex. New Spain and Peru were colonies under control of the mother country Spain)
Conquistadors Spanish conquerors of Latin America (ex. Hernan Cortes & Francisco Pizzaro)
Astrolabe An instrument used to measure the angle of the sun or a star in order to figure out one's location
Viceroy Official who rules a colony in place of the king
Imperialism A strong country takes over and controls a weaker country
The Middle Passage The transport of slaves from Africa to the Americas across the Atlantic Ocean (called such due it being the "middle leg" of the triangle trade)
African Diaspora The forced dispersal (spreading out) of Africans from their homeland
