Chapter 6 India and Persia SFDS

Key ItemDefinition
Aryans Warriors and herders from eastern Europe and Western Asia who migrated to India beginning about 3,000 years ago.
Sanskrit A language of India, first spoken by the ancient Aryans.
Vedas Ancient books of sacred Hindu writings.
Hinduism A religion native to India, featuring belief in many gods and reincarnation.
Reincarnation The belief that the soul lives on after death and returns to life in a new body.
Caste A group within a social class.
Untouchable In India, the people below all castes. The name from the idea that others would be made impure from their touch.
Changes brought on by the Aryans 1. Horses 2. Village life 3. Language Sanskrit 4. Religious Beliefs Hinduism 5. Social Classes The caste system.
The Caste system Brahams, the priests and nobles on the top. Then the Kshatriyas, rulers and warriors. Vaisyas, the farmers and merchants. Sudras, labors craftworkers and servants. Then the untouchables.
Buddha The founder of Buddhism. Grew up in the Brahman class and then wanted to figure out the meaning to life and the way to peace and happiness. Spread his ideas to others.
Jakata Tales Fables created by Buddha to teach his followers how to live to the best they can. They demonstrate the characteristics and values to be practiced by his followers.
Rajah An Indian prince.
Assassination Murder for political reasons.
Turning Point A time of important changes.
Missionaries A person sent out to teach about a religion.
Arabic Numerals The base-ten number system 1 through 9 and the zero; used in India as early as A.D. 595.
Inoculation Giving a person a mild form of a disease so that he or she will not get sick with a more serious from.
Chandragupta Maurya The first emperor of India. Ruled with a firm hand. Turned the peasants into slaves and taxed them heavily. He and his son expanded the size of the empire.
Ashoka The grandson of Chandragupta Maurya. He was so upset by war that he experienced a turning point in his life and began to practice Buddhism. Became a wonderful leader and is loved by all the people in India.
Arthashastra The book that Chandragupta Maurya used to govern his empire. Believed that government was a "science of punishment."
The Gupta Empire Created by Chandragupta the First. During this families rule, India experiences its Golden Age.
The Golden Age of India It's during this time that India is not at war and can focus on the arts. The Panchatantra was created which is a book of folk lore and tales. Also Arabic numerals and inoculation was created.
Plateau A high, flat area of land.
Cavalry Soldiers who ride horses or other animals to make swift attacks.
Tribute Yearly payments.
Courier A person who delivers messages.
Prophet A person who others believe speaks or writes a divine message.
Zoroastrianism A religion started by Zarathustra that teaches the belief in two gods, one good and one evil.
Cyrus the Great The first emperor of the Persian Empire. He conquered land all the way from Egypt to India.
Darius the Organizer 1. Let people keep their own culture and rulers. 2. Created a better road and transportation system to improve travel and trade. 3. People paid tribute. 4. Used couriers to deliever messages all across the empire.
