Wht is Islam? Founded by Muhammad in about the year 580 and is Monotheistic. Is the most influential element of Middle Eastern culture.
What is a Mosque? Is the name of the place of worship for Muslims
What is the Quran? Considered the holy book for Muslims
Who are the Sunni? Are Muslim people who believe the Caliph (leader) of the Muslim world should be chosen from a group of Muslim leaders. They make up 85% of modern day Muslims
Who are Shi’a? Are Muslim people who believe the Caliph (leader) of the Muslim world should have stayed within Muhammad’s family
What is the Hajj? Is the yearly pilgrimage taken by Muslims to Mecca.
Who are Nomads? People who have not permanent place to live, rather they move frequently either following grazing fields or game to hunt
What is a Bazaar? Earlier form of a market, was important for the spread of culture and ideas
What is Astrolabe? Used for determining where the sun, moon and stars would be at any given time. This allowed travelers to determine direction
About how long did the Ottoman Empire last? 500 years
When did the Ottoman Empire Fall? After WWI
What group began the Ottoman Empire? Turkish speaking nomads
Under what ruler did the Ottoman Empire have it's "golden age"? Suleiman
What is a Sultan? a king in the Ottoman Empire
What is a Grand Vizier? High ranking official in the Ottoman Empire
Who were Janissaries? converted Christians who formed the personal guard for the Sultan and later the standing army for the Ottomans
What is an import? Goods that a nation buys from another country
What is an export? Goods that a nations sells to another country
What is Currency? What is considered valuable for the exchange of goods
What is a Trade route? The path goods took for trade with other countries, important because of the exchange in culture
What is a Caravan? Groups who traveled together along trade routes important for safety
