Vocabulary Sacrament of Reconciliation

QuestionAnswer
Absolution An essential part of the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation in which the priest pardons the sins of the person confessing, in the name of God and the Church.
Act of Contrition A penitential prayer that expresses sorrow for sins.
Amendment of sin One must do what is possible in order to repair the harm (e.g., return stolen goods, restore the reputation of someone slandered, pay compensation for injuries). Simple justice requires as much.
Communal Penance (Are there any restrictions? When and why is it offered?) A group celebration of the Sacrament of Penance. It was instituted by Pope Paul VI in 1973.
concupiscence (Check capitalization and punctuation.) tendency of all human beings toward sin, due to Original Sin
Confession When we confess our sins to a priest in a private setting so that we can live in full communion with God.
General absolution When a priest does a large group absolution of sins. This is typically done when there is a threat of death and many people need to be absolved of their sins.
Grave or Mortal sin Is the knowing and willful violation of God's law in a serious matter, for example, idolatry, adultery, murder, slander. These are all things gravely contrary to the love we owe God and, because of Him, our neighbor.
Imperfect Contrition Sorrow for sin animated by a supernatural motive that is less than a perfect love of God. Some of the motives for imperfect contrition are the fear of the pains of hell, of losing heaven, of being punished by God.
Individual confession (why use plural and single?) When we privately confess their sins in front of a priest and receive absolution from the guilt of their sins
Justification The process of a sinner becoming justified or made right with God; the change from the condition in which a person is born as a child of the first Adam into a state of grace and adoption among the children of God through the Second Adam, Jesus Christ.
Ongoing conversion The act of continuing to return again to God; includes profound sorrow for our sins, a real disgust for them, and a firm commitment to avoid sin in the future.
Penance (why do we have need to do penance?) The priest gives us a prayer or task to do in order to receive forgiveness for our sins.
Penitent A person who repents their sins or wrongdoings and (in the Christian Church) who seeks forgiveness from God.
Reconciliation Commonly called Confession or Penance is one of seven sacraments of the Catholic Church and sacred mysteries of Eastern Christianity, in which the faithful obtain divine mercy for the sins committed against God and neighbor and are reconciled the Church.
Remission of Punishment (need to clarify and add more.) Someone who dies with repented mortal sin. Therefore living without God for all ETERNITY.
Repentance (Contrition) An attitude of sorrow for a sin committed and a resolution not to sin again.
Satisfaction (You need a definition that is more specific to the sacrament.) fulfillment of one's wishes, expectations, or needs, or the pleasure derived from this.
Seal of Confession (Check capitalization and punctuation) the absolute duty of the priests not to disclose anything that they learn from penitents during the course of the Sacrament of Penance
Temptation (check capitalization and punctuation.) a desire to do something, especially something wrong or unwise.
Venial sin A less serious offense against the will of God that diminishes one's personal character and weakens but does not rupture one's relationship with God.
