| Simile | makes a comparison using the words like or as |
| Metaphor | makes a comparison of two different things without a word of comparison |
| Personification | describes something non humans if it had human qualities |
| Hyperbole | an extreme exaggeration |
| Alliteration | the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words |
| Rhyme | the use of rhyming words at the end or within two or more lines of poetry |
| Blank Verse | unrhymed verse |
| Tone | the writers attitude or feelings toward his or her subject |
| Allusion | a reference to a well-known person, place, thing, or event that the writer assumes the reader will be familiar with |
| Stanza | a group of lines within a poem |
| Act | a major section of a play, usually made up several scenes |
| Scene | a subdivision of an act; usually indicates a specific location and time |
| Script | the written text of a play |
| Dialogue | the lines spoken by the actors; in the script, preceded by the name of the character that is to speak the words |
