old regime came Before the revolution, was made up of three groups First estate second estate and third estate.
the first estate the clergy, consisted of rich and poor-- one percent of the population.
first estate benefits exempt from taxes owned 10% of the land collected rents, fees, and the tithe.
the tithe one-tenth part of something, paid as a contribution to a religious organization or compulsory tax to government.
the second estate the nobility, inherited or bought their tiles. less than 2% of the population most enjoyed the privileges and wealth
the second estate benifits paid few taxes owned 20% of the land held key positions in the government and military lived on country estates.
the third estate the common people--97% of the population everyone not a member of the first or second estates was a member of the third.
the groups of the third estate bourgeoisie, sans culottes, and the peasants.
