Part 3 - Rites of Passage and Ritual

Name the Muslim place of worship. Mosque
What is the meaning of the word mosque? A place where people bow down in the presence of God.
What is a minaret? A tall narrow tower with a small balcony at the top.
How does a Muslim show respect on entering a mosque? Everyone removes their footwear and covers their heads.
How do Muslims prepare for prayers at the mosque? By washing their feet, hands, arms and head.
What is the mihrab? A small arch built into one wall of the mosque.
What is the purpose of a mihrab? It points in the direction of Mecca showing Muslims which direction they must face to pray.
What is the minbar? A small platform similar to a pulpit.
What is the purpose of a minbar? Sermons are preached from her during Friday morning prayer.
Why are their no pictures or images in a mosque? The Prophet Muhammad did not want images of any kind in the Muslim place of worship.
What is the role of the imam? The leader in the mosque.
What is the role of the muezzin? A crier that stands on the balcony and calls Muslims to prayer five times a day.
What is a pilgrimage? A journey made by a pilgrim to a shrine or sacred place.
Give one reason people go on pilgrimage. To connect with God in a special way.
What are 'Places of Significance'? Places or buildings that have a special meaning for people.
What are 'Actions of Significance'? Actions that have a special meaning for people.
Name the most sacred place in the religion of Islam. Mecca
What is the Hajj? The pilgrimage to Mecca which is the fifth pillar of Islam.
How long do pilgrims spend on the Hajj? Five or more days
Why do all pilgrims wear the same clothes during Hajj? To show that everyone is equal before Allah.
Name the holiest month in the Islamic calendar. Ramadan
What important event is remembered at Ramadan? When Allah revealed himself to the Prophet Muhammad through the angel Gabriel.
What is Eid-ul-fitr? A 3 day festival that takes place at the end of Ramadan.
What is Eid-ul-Adha? A festival that celebrates the end of the Hajj two months after Eid-ul-Fitr.
Name one thing Muslims spend extra time doing during Ramadan. Prayer
