What kind of music was most important during the Middle Ages? Plainsong or Plainchant is the kind of music most important during the Middle Ages.
How did people’s attitudes about music change during the Renaissance? More people became interested in science, philosophy, paintings and sculptures.
What was the single most important change in music to happen during the Renaissance? The combining of voices, or polyphony, was the most important change in music.
What is the Mass, and what type of music did a Renaissance Mass involve? Mass is a Catholic church service that celebrates Christ’s Last Supper in sacrifice on the Cross. A capella was involved.
What were common topics of secular music in the Renaissance? Common topics were love or amusing stories.
Name at least two famous Renaissance composers and describe the music they wrote. Josquin Desprez wrote secular and sacred music. Palestrina wrote sacred music.
What is a pavane? What is a galliard? What is the difference between the two? A pavane is a slow and formal dance that included many bows and curtsies. A galliard is a lively dance in which the men would hop into the air. The difference between the two is that a pavane is more formal while a galliard is more lively and active.
What were two instruments that were popular during the Renaissance? A recorder and the lute were popular during the Renaissance.
What does it mean to say that someone is “quixotic,” and where does the word come from? It means that a person is a dreamer, or has their head in the clouds and is not practical. The word comes from the name of a hero of a book named Don Quixote.
What were some of the difficulties that Cervantes encountered during his life? Cervantes fought against the Turks, his ship was attacked by pirates, he was held responsible for stolen money, and was put in jail.
What didn’t Don Quixote make Cervantes rich? Many people got pirated copies so he never made a cent on his book.
What type of book was Cervantes making fun of when he wrote DonQuixote? The romances of chivalry was what Cervantes wanted to make fun of.
What is Don Quixote like, and why does he appeal to many readers despite his foolishness? Don Quixote is an older man who loves to read romances about the knights of Middle Ages. He appeals to readers because he pursues his dreams no matter what the obstacle.
What kind of literary works did Shakespeare write? He wrote poems and plays.
What are the title of some of his plays? Much Ado About Nothing, Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet and A Midsummer’s Night Dream are some of his plays.
What is a bard, and why is Shakespeare sometimes called “The Bard of Avon?” Bard is another word for poet. He is called that because Shakespeare was born in Avon.
How was a performance at the Globe Theater different from modern theatrical performances? It was in a dome building, where poor people stood at the yard and rich people sat on the galleries. People are allowed to yell at the actors. The performances were only in daylight and good weather. There was hardly any scenery.
Who was Johann Gutenberg? He was “John Gooseflesh” and was born in Germany.
What was his famous invention? How were books made before his invention? He invented the printing press. Before, you had to write books by hand and make many copies by hand.
Why were some government and church officials worried about Gutenberg's invention? They thought that the printing press would be used to spread ideas that would weaken their power over people.
