Assessment collecting information about the person and observation is using the sense of sight, hearing, touch and smell to collect information
Objective Data information that is heard, felt or smelled
Subjective Data things a person tells you about that you cannot observe through your senses
Listening Skills involved are facing the person, have good eye contact, lean toward the person and respond to the person
Paraphrasing restate the person's message in your own words
Clarifying lets you verify you understood the message
Silence Nothing - sometimes needed to obtain information
Kinesics Study of nonverbal communication
Kinesic slip When verbal and nonverbal messages do not match
Intimate space 18" or closer
Personal space 18" to 4'
Social space 4' to 12'
