What kingdom was the first great trading state in West Africa? Ghana
Where was Ghana located? Between the Sahara and the tropical rain forests along the West African coast.
How were people in Ghana governed? It was a farming kingdom with many villages and each village had a local ruler.
What two commodities did Ghana have an abundance of? Iron and gold
Who did Ghana trade with? Muslim merchants from North Africa
What did Ghana trade iron and gold for? Metal goods, textiles, horses and salt.
Of all the commodities Ghana had or traded for, which one was the most important and why? Salt. Improved the taste of food, preserved food, had healing properties and it replaced what their bodies lost in the hot climate.
Besides iron and gold, what else did Ghana export to other civilizations? Ivory, hides, and slaves
What nomadic people carried goods across the desert in caravans? Berbers
How did kings prosper in the trading of goods? They placed a tax on goods that entered or left their kingdom.
By the 8th and 9th century, who was in control of the trade in upper Africa? Muslim merchants who sold merchandise to the Berbers who then carried the items across the desert.
Who established the great trading state of Mali? Sundiata Keita
What is the name of Mali's famous trading city? Timbuktu
Who was the richest and most powerful king of Mali? Mansa Musa
What did Timbuktu become recognized as? One of the intellectual capitals of the Muslim world.
Who controlled the government and military of the kingdom of Songhai? Sunni Ali
What were Sunni Ali's two greatest conquests? Timbuktu and Djenne
Why was gaining control of Timbuktu and Djenne so important to Sunni Ali? To gain control of the salt and gold trade which used to be controlled by Ghana and Mali.
Who ruled Songhai at the height of its power? Muhammad Ture
