SFDS INDUS

Key ItemDefinition
Subcontinent A large land area isolated from the rest of a continent.
Tributary A smaller river that feeds into a larger river.
Inscription A written message etched into a long-lasting surface.
Himalayas The mountain chain to the north of the Indus River Valley. Kept the Indus River civilization isolated from the rest of the cultures. Also provided the floods when the mountain snows melted in the spring.
Monhenjo-Daro A well preserved city that gives us the most clues as to what it was like to live in the Indus River Valley. It has wide streets, houses that could be as many as two stories high, enough grain in the fortress to feed all the poeple.
Indus Social Structure Most of the people in the Indus valley were merchants and craftworkers. They marked their goods with little square tablets that had inscriptions and pictures that showed who owned the item.
Mystery of Mohenjo-Daro The people of the Indus River Valley disappeared suddenly. Scientists think that maybe there was a drought, severe flood, or attacks from anonther group of people.
Legend A story handed down from earlier times to explain the past.
Ancestor A deceased relative who lived longer ago than a grandparent.
Oracle A person who gives wise advice.
Pictograph A drawing or symbol used to represent a word in the Chinese language.
Yu the Great God of ancient China who saved China from a great flood. He dug two huge rivers and taught the farmers how to create canals and dikes. And now they can farm again. This story stresses the importance of agriculture in China.
Xia Dynasty The first dynasty in China. Possibly started by Yu the Great.
Shang Dynasty Expanded the empire, created a form of government, and developed a social structure.
Religion The people of China believed the their ancestors could communicate with the gods, and therefore they would pray to them to ward off natural disasters.
Oracle Bones A way the king would find out the answers to his questions. He would take his question to an oracle. Then the oracle would place two hot metal rods on a tortoise shell or bone while thinking about the question. Then he would take the shell or bone to t
Social Classes Nobles and king are at the top. They are able to read and are the government officials. Then the farmers and laborers are at the bottom. Most of the laws were created to protect the wealth and power of the nobles.
