Who was Umar's successor? Uthman
Why was Uthman murdered? Rebels believed he favored his own clan.
Who was Uthman's successor? Ali
Who was Ali's successor? Mu'awiyah
What Mu'awiyah feel? He felt that he or his son should be leader.
In A.D. 711 what did the muslims invade? Spain (known as the Moors)
What did the Sunni believe? Believed that any capable leader can be caliph
What the Shiah believe? only a relative of Muhammad/Ali could rule
How did Islamic faith spread? trade.
What did trade link? Trade linked Europe, Asia, and Africa.
What did the muslims produce? They produced silk, carpet, tapestries, and cotton.
What became the centers for learning? Cordoba + Toledo
what was the government like? At first there was one caliph and then three assigned Boghdad, cairo, and cordoba.
What was society like? Men were allowed up to four wives-more rights for women, could retain property and remarry.
What was the place of education? Mosques
What did the muslims get new ideas about from india? astronomy and mathematics.
What was one very famous greek physician? al-Razi
What did al-Razi comply? A medical encyclopedia.
What is one famous doctor? Ibn-Sina
What did Ibn-Sina create? What was it called? A textbook on medicine. It was called Cannon of medicine.
Name one famous muslim geographer. al-idrisi
What did al-idrisi construct? Geographical maps
What is an astrolobe? An instrument which allowed observers to chart the positions of the stars.
In mathematics....what concept dd they use? concept of zero
What did they avoid in art? human or animal pictures
Instead what images did they create? geometric patterns + floral designs.
What is a minaret? A tower attached to a mosque.
