| Nomad | Someone who travels from place to place in search of food |
| Neolithic age | The change from hunting and gathering to herding, farming, permanent settlements and specialized jobs |
| Ziggurat | A massive pyramid-like temple built in Ancient Mesopotamia |
| Fertile Crescent | The arc-shaped area that stretches from the eastern Mediterranean along the Tigris and Euphrates rivers to the Persian Gulf |
| Cuneiform | Ancient Sumerian wedge-shaped writing system |
| Hieroglyphics | Ancient Egyptian writing system that used pictures and symbols to represent words and sounds |
| Civilization | Highly organized society with its own language and ways of life. |
| Subsistence Farming | Producing just enough food for oneself (no surplus) |
| Fertile Crescent | The arc-shaped area of land that stretches between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers |
