| Hieroglyphics | Form of picture writing developed by the ancient Egyptians. |
| Ideogram | Picture that symbolizes an idea or action. |
| Demotic | Egyptian language 'of the people.' (Gk. Demos = people) |
| Papyrus | Reed along the Nile that was used as paper. |
| Decipher | To decode. |
| Hierarchy | Social classes; Upper, middle, lower |
