Generic Name Ibuprofen
Brand Manes Advil, Motrin, Nuprin
Classifications antipyretic, analgesic, NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent)
Uses Mild to moderate pain, dysmenorrhea, rheumatoid arthritis, fever
Route PO (By mouth)
Side Effects Headache (HA), constipation, dyspepsia, nausea, emesis, dizziness, drowsiness, GI bleeding, hepatitis, anaphylaxis
Care considerations Monitor pain and/or temperature. Take with food or milk if causes GI upset. Take with full glass water. Do not take with alcohol. do not take more than 10 days for pain or more than 3 days for fever
Antipyretic Anti- anainst, pyr- heat or fever, ic- pertaining to
Analgesic An- without, algia- pain, ic- pertaining to
Dysmenorrhea dys-difficult or painful, menses- blood and discharge from uterus during cycle, orrhea- flow or discharge
Rheumatoid arthritis Chronic inflamamatory disorder that cause inflammation to joint. Arthr- joint, it is inflammation
Dyspepsia Dys- difficult or painful, pepsis- digestion, ia- condition of or abnormal
Hepatitis Hepat- liver, itis- inflammation
Anaphylaxis An extreme, sometimes fatal, allergic reaction-cause airway to close
Care considerations do not use with GI bleed;heart, kidney, or liver disease.
