Alexander Techinque | Developed by Frederick Matthias Alexander. Process of movement re-education to identify & rid the body of faulty postures by replacing habit w/ conscious movement. |
Applied Kinesiology | Developed by George Good hart. The use of muscle testing to evaluate strength & weaknesses or imbalances in the body. |
Aston Patterning | Developed by Judith Aston. A combination of deep tissue & other massage combined w/ movement education. Sessions may include massge, movement education, fitness training, postural evaluation, & environmental modifications. |
Bindegewebsmassage | the use of dermatomes (segement planes of the dermis) of connective tissue to identify problems based on the theory that imbalance anywhere in the body is imbalance in the total body |
Connective tissue massage | A light technique of dragging & pulling the skin to release the superficial fascia |
Craniosacral | A technique that focuses on releasing blockages in the flow of the craniosacral fluid & releasing emotional trauma. Upledger, Milne, & Sutherland are all known for their respective craniosacral techniques |
Esalen | a body/mind/spirit modality consisting of very light swedish massage aimed at inducing deep states of relaxation |
Feldenkrais | A process of unlearning restrictive movement habits & replacing them with efficient, graceful movement |

Kinesiology | the study of muscle movement. Also refers to several different modalities of muscle testing to restore health & balance to the body, sometimes incorporating nutrition & other forms of bodywork |

Medical massage | bodywork performed for the purpose of injury repair & rehabilitation from pathological conditions |
Myofascial release | Any method directed at treating restrctions or adhesions in the fascia & muscles |
Myotherapy | Trigger point therapy that includes re-education of the muscle. Develpoed by Bonnie Prudden |
Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) | A technique directed at returning the body to a state ot structural balance; also referred to as trigger poing therapy. Developed by Chaitow. In America by Paul St. John & Janet Travell |
Orthopedic Massage | Massage developed from osteopathic techniques, focusing on rehabilitating connective tissue, tendons, ligaments, carilage, & soft tissue surrounding a bone injury or insult. |
Postural integration | a body/mind/spirit modality that incorporates breath work, deep fascial work, & emotional work to restore structural balance to the body |
Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) | A technique during which a muscle is stretched to resistance and held for 10 seconds, followed by the client contracting the muscle for 5 seconds |
Reflexology | Treating the reflex zone & points found on the hands, feet, and ears that correspond to a map of the body , internal tissues, & organs. Developed by Dr. Fitzgerald & Eunice Ingham. |
Rolfing | Deep structural realignment that takes place over the course of 10 sessions. Developed by Ida Rolf |
Rosen method | Breathing & relaxation techinques accompanied by rebalancing alignment & increasing flexibility using nonintrusive touching, verbal interaction, & breathing. Developed by Marion Rosen. |
Robenfield synergy | A body/mind/spirit approach combining psychotherapy w/ movements, postures, talk therapy, dreamwork, & other techniques |
Strain counter strain | also called postional release, is to guide the body into a spacewhere the muscle tension can release on its own from the painful tender point of the strain. |
Trager | Gentle rocking & other nonintrusive movements to facilitate the release of deep physical & emotional restrictions. The hook-up, a nature state of being similar to a meditative state, is used to connect the practioner w/ the energy of client. milton trager |

Zero Balancing | Treatments performed w/ the client fully clothed & in a seated position, progressing to a reclining position, focus on integrating the physical body w/ the energetic body. Developed by Fritz Smith. |
