SMBG - Self Monitoring Blood Glucose Instructions

QuestionAnswer
Step 1 Wash hands properly
Step 2 Turn on glucometer
Step 3 Insert a test strip after matching the code # on the glucometer to the code # on the strip
Step 4 Cleanse the side of a fingertip with alcohol swab and let dry
Step 5 Don exam gloves (MA Only)
Step 6 Hold the patient finger between your thumb and forfinger
Step 7 Prick the side of the cleansed fingertip with a lancet
Step 8 Dispose of the lancet in a sharps container
Step 9 Wipe away the first drop of blood with a sterile 2x2 gauze pad because the first drop is usually contaminated with tissue fluids
Step 10 Apply steady pressure and allow a second drop of blood to form
Step 11 Touch and hold the second drop of blood to the EDGE of the yellow window in the curve of the test strip
Step 12 Hold pressure on the puncture site with a sterile 2x2 gauze pad
Step 13 Access the patients physical condition
Step 14 Discard the test strip in a biohazard bag
Step 15 Apply a band-aid on the puncture site
Step 16 Disinfect the glucometer with alcohol swabs
Step 17 Discard exam gloves in a biohazard bag
Step 18 Wash your hands
Step 19 Document the patients test results and physical condition in the medical record
Step 20 Ask the patient to document all their glucose levels in a BS log
