Venipuncture
Steps in Correct Order

| step # 1 | Introduce yourself to patient. |
| step # 2 | Identify the patient using at least 2 identifiers. |
| step # 3 | Have the patient sit or lie down. |
| step # 4 | Wash your hands, & put gloves on. |
| step # 5 | Assemble equipment |
| step # 6 | Apply the tourniquet |
| step # 7 | Ask patient to make a fist on the arm the draw will be done on. |
| step # 8 | Palpate for vein. |
| step # 9 | Choose the most accessible vein. |
| step # 10 | Cleanse the site |
| step # 11 | Uncap the needle, & inspect it for burrs or blunt edges. |
| step # 12 | Stabilize the vein with the thumb, firmly pull down the skin below the vein. |
| step # 13 | Alert patient of the insertion & that he may feel a pinch |
| step # 14 | Insert the needle at a 1 to 30 degree angle. |
| step # 15 | Insert evacuated tube |
| step # 16 | Ask patient to release fist & untie the tourniquet |
| step # 17 | Remove & invert |
| step # 18 | Remove needle w/same angle of insertion |
| step # 19 | Recap the needle & place in sharps container |
| step # 20 | Provide pressure @ the site |
| step # 21 | Check the site |
| step # 22 | Apply bandage |
| step # 23 | Label all specimens |
| step # 24 | Thank the patient |
| step # 25 | Observe for any complications |
| step # 26 | Remove gloves |
| step # 27 | Wash Hands |
