The Renaissance and the Reformation

| secular | related to worldly things |
| urban | having to do with a town or city |
| mercenary | a soldier who fights for money rather than loyalty to a country |
| diplomacy | the practice of conducting negotiations between countries |
| humanism | belief in the worth of the individual and that reason is a path to knowledge |
| Reformation | a religious movement that produced a new form of Christianity known and Protestantism |
| indulgence | a pardon, or forgiveness, of a sin |
| predestination | a religious belief that God has already decided who will go to heaven and who will not |
| annul | to declare invalid |
| seminary | a school of religious training |
| heresy | a religious belief that contradicts what the church says is true |
