How did rich men make their castle more colorful? Bright tapestries, silk and fur bed coverings, paintings
What was the most elegant tast of clothing? To wear planty different colors at the same time
What is a wimple? A covering of linen or silk worn arranged in folds over the neck, chin and sides of face
How long was a fortnight? 14 days
Why would someone want to break the law just to dress lavishly? It was a mark of rising
Did they dress is lavish costumes everyday? No, most days they wore simple dress
What was on the tapestries that hung from the wall? Scenes from the Bible or of saints, hunting and hawking
What time was supper and what did they eat? 9-11am; venison, bear, peacock, swan, salmon, eel pie
What was a subtlety? A sugar and pastry float that ended an alaborate meal
Trencers Plates used to eat from, first made from bread then later from wood
What did people of the Middle Ages eat with? What did they think about forks? They ate with knives and their fingers, they thought using a fork was a foolish, sinful luxury
What was the job of a minstrel? They sang and played instruments
What was another name for the jester? A fool. But he was actually very wise
Did girls go to school? They were taught by the ladies of the castle to sew, manage a household, sing, defend themselves and nurse a wounded knight
What would they do after dining in the great hall? Play games
What is a feudal tenor? Nobles would receive land from the king, and promise to protect him
What is a vassal? A noble who committed himself to the king
What was 'doing homage'? The ceremony where the noble bound himself to the king
What was a money feif? A fixed amount of money a knig would pay a knight yearly for his service
How long was the military service required from a vassal? 40 days
What else was a vassal required to do whilw on duty? Offer advice, defend the king and entertain
When a vassal died, who would take his place His son
Feudal System The political system in Europe during the Middle Ages. A network of kings and their vassals which provided a hierarchy of protection
What was a liege lord? A man who could do homage to a number of different men for land, but owed military duty to only one of them
Ranks of common people: Slaves, had no rights; villeins, could not be sold but stayed with the land if it was sold; free tenants, paid for land with service and money
What was the difference between a castle and a manor? A monor was where the lords lived, mini castles
How was farm land divided? In long, narrow strips
What is an extent? The list of men and work required for each peice of land
About how much of a villeins time was given in service to his lord? One half
Who would judge between a villein and his lord The lord
Name three officials who ran the manor Reeve, in charge of the land; baliff, in charge of the whole manor and produce sold; steward, checked on other land owned by the lord
What was meant when a house was sweetened? When they travelled to other manors just to let their manor air out
Why did a tenant not grieve for his freedom? Because it was so dangerous, they needed the protection of the feudal system
What two events ended the feudal system? The black plague, the knights were defeated by the yeomen
In what way are we influenced today by a custom that originated in the Middle Ages? When a man dies and has no heirs, his estate goes to the king, or the government
