Reproduction Vocabulary

Artificial Insemination the placing of sperm cells in contact with female reproductive cells by a method other than natural mating.
Ova female reproductive cells or eggs from the ovary of an animal
Sperm male reproductive cellls
Embryo Transfer a process that removes fertilized eggs from a female and places them in another female who carries them until birth
Zygote fertilized eggs
Breed a group of animals having similar physical characteristics that are passed on to their offspring
Gamete a reproductive cell
Cell a unit of protoplasmic material with a nucleus and cell walls
Mitosis simple cell division for growth
Meiosis cell division that results in gametes (reproductive cell division)

Phenotype the physical appearance of an individual
Testes organs that produce sperm cells
Estrus heat period, or time when a female is ready for mating
Progesterone hormone that prevents estrus during pregnancy and causes development of the mammary (milk producing) system
Ovulation the process of releasing mature eggs from the ovary
Parturition birth
Gestation length of pregnancy
Freemartin sexually imperfect female calf, usually sterile, born as a twin to a male calf
Mutation a change in the gene sequence of an individual's DNA
